The lungs is a very important organ in our body, sometimes we take this organ for granted. It is one of the things that keep us alive. We need to take proper care of our lungs to avoid damaging it.
Most people think that smoking is the only thing that can damage the lungs. But there are many things we ignore that can damage our lungs. It is very good we know some of them, so we can avoid them.
Candles are mainly produced from petroleum-based paraffin. It releases soot into the air that can lead to several allergic reactions, like asthma or even cancer. Using it often is not very good but you can use it occasionally. It is safer to use candle produced from beewax, also ensure proper ventilation while using it. Beewax candle produced less soot than the one from paraffin.
I know it might sound awkward saying that farming can damage your lungs, when it is the primary source of food.
Different farm operations ranging from application of pesticide to tilling the ground, can release particles and chemical that can cause lungs disease.
It doesn’t mean we should not farm, but we need some safety measures at to help reduce lungs damage.
Cockroach is a very unpleasant insect, it also releases substances or allergens, this allergens aggravate asthma and cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to them, this allergens are concentrated in their body parts. These tiny particles can become airborne and contaminate the air in our homes.
You can control cockroaches by keeping your home clean and trying to reduce humidity in your home.
Using carpets in your home can be very dangerous to your health. It traps pollutants like dust mites, cockroach allergens, lead, mold spores, pesticides, dirt and dust. These pollutant becomes airborne during daily activities like walking on the carpet.
Some of the new carpet is made with Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), this emit pollutants and all this can be very dangerous to your lungs.
When one is exposed to airborne particles from bird feather or their fecal material, He/She is likely to suffer from hypersensitivity pneumonitis, commonly known as birds breeders lungs.
However, not everyone that has birds will have this problem, people vary in their sensitivity to particulate in the air.
Flour can cause a type of occupational cancer that is common to people that work in a bakery. It is caused when an individual is exposed to cereal grain such as wheat, rye and yeast.
When people are sensitive to flour dust, they first develop eye or nose symptoms before they develop asthma.
Pesticides are normally used to control insect infestation in our farms. This pesticides is associated with various health problem. It is one of the casual factors for the rise in asthma prevalence.
Air bags found in our cars has sodium azide as the main propellant in the air bag system. Through some complex reaction, it is broken down to nitrogen gas and sodium salt. It is the nitrogen gas that fills the air bags in case of accident. This sodium salts have been implicated to cause asthma.
Also, the inhalation of this sodium azide can cause respiratory distress, pulmonary edema and cardiopulmonary failure.
The fumes from cooking gas have harmful effects on human lungs cell. According to a research, when gas is burned, some particles are produced. This particles is passed over lung cell in the laboratory, it seems to cause inflammatory effect.
This in theory could translate into breathing problems or worsening problems for those with existing respiratory disease.
The metallic parties in the smoke emitted by fireworks pose a health risk, mainly for people that have asthma. Research has shown that metallic particles in the smoke from fireworks are bio-reactive and can affect human health.
There are also many other things that we do that may damage our lungs including radon, mold, humidifier and other. Try as much as possible to control the ones you can.
